The ethnic composition of Bolivia is, 60% native indigenous people, 30% mixed Amerindian and European.
Because of political corruption and a long period of colonization, it remains the most underdeveloped country in South America.
Walking through the streets and churches in Bolivia, it is easy to see the shadow of it’ s colonial past.
Even so, there are contradictions;
the man with the trendiest suit and the Indian woman covering their face to hide from the camera.
Women wear their hair in two long braids. They carry their babies in colorful blankets, and feed them on the street unrestrainedly.
Married woman have to wear a hat, and do not take it off except to sleep.
In the native culture, the temple is the core of the society, and a person’ s head is thought to be the temple.
This is why the head is covered with a hat, for extra protection.
Sometimes it can be risky to take a photo here.
Because some people believe that the camera will capture your soul, you could end up being chased, or people might throw eggs at you.
On the other hand, a shy kid might stop you and ask you to take his photo, and give you the most innocent smile on earth.
Wandering this city, not yet polluted by consumerism and capitalism,
watching the tough women in the local market, making faces at the kids in the street,
I feel as if I tore into a dream of a hundred years ago.
